Meet Kari Bishop.

Continuing the introductions after giving you a little background on make-up artist Alex Evans, I'd like you to meet Kari!

First off, let me start by saying how amazing it has been to work with Alli, Alex, and all of the models I have met through out this year. I’m excited to see what 2013 has in store for for me.

What got you started in hair?

It’s in my blood. My mother was a Cosmetologist, and so was my Great Grandmother. It’s something that I have always loved doing.

What's your educational background? Have you ever considered pursuing something outside of hair styling, or have you always known this is what you wanted to do?

I went to a beauty college in my hometown of Santa Maria, right after high school. I have considered other career options, because this is a hard career to break in to. I have to pay to work. It takes hard work and dedication to become something, and yes, there will be twelve hour days. When my mom’s aunt Bobbie came to visit and paid me a quarter to brush her hair and I realized I could turn a profit, I knew it was for me.

Dream job?

Are you ready? I want to be an actress, writer, director, tap dancer, runway model, fashion designer, cupcake baker, painter, mother, wife, doctor, opera singer, and comedian. I’m not even good at half of those things. Over half really, but a girl can dream.

What are your favorite hair styles to do; weddings, editorial, avant garde, etc.?

Everything, I just love to be creative! I really enjoy educating my clients on how to style and care for their own hair.

Your favorite hair styling job so far?

When I did my sister’s hair for her senior portraits. I don’t think that I have ever been more proud; she’s a smart young woman.
Kari doing what she does best. August 2012.

What hair products can you not leave the house without?

I always have to start with a great shampoo and conditioner. I use Pureology. Not only is it Sulfate free but it’s also 100% vegan. I always use Enjoy Conditioning Spray, it’s also Sulfate free and PH balanced. TIGI Catwalk Your Highness hair spray is always on hand, when you’re around me, and for that nice healthy shine I like to use Kenra Silkening Mist. All the products that I use are cruelty free.

What inspires you?

The world. Life. Fashion. Pinterest. Yeah, I said it.

Who are your beauty idols?
Elizabeth Taylor. Audrey Hepburn. Mortica Addams. Julie Newmar. Tess Munster. David Bowie.

Craziest hair styling request you've gotten from a client?

“Leave my clips in while you cut my hair."
“Please, don’t get my hair wet." [After I’ve already applied color and will, obviously, have to rinse it out.]

Now, for the serious stuff:

Top five albums?

Anything Queen.
Anything Johnny Cash.
Black Flag: My War
Mumford and Sons: Sigh No More
Listener: Wooden Heart

You're trapped on a desert island. You're allowed to bring five things. What are they?

A blanket. A cozy one.
My boyfriend. [Insert: “Ahhwww"]
Sunscreen, I'm Irish. I will burn.
Nerf guns, because, why the heck not?!?!?

Top five films?

The Sandlot
The Breakfast Club
Wizard of Oz

...This is England

What's in your purse right now?

Pepper Spray
MAC Viva Glam 1
Dr. Jart BB Cream
Fresh Sugar Lip Balm
Betsey Johnson wallet
Loose change
Gum wrappers
Ticket stubs from the PCPA from Wizard of Oz.

You're allowed to wear one outfit for the rest of your life. What is it?

Rude. This is hard, because I just bought a sequin skirt and I’m in love with it, however, I do have my trusty mustard yellow sweater. Okay, my black and white chevron striped dress, with my denim over shirt, and my brown boots. I can change my accessories daily, because I do what I want!!

Last top five, I promise: Top five books or magazines. Can be either one, or a mix of both.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville
It by Stephen King
Anything by Dr. Seuss or Shel Silverstein.

Thank you, Kari! You're always fun to work with, and taking your portraits was a great way to start off the new year! :)

  1. I love her list of products that are cruelty free but was wondering where you can buy them.

    1. You can find these products at professional salons. I would try calling any of your local salons and asking if they carry any of these brands, or if they carry cruelty free brands. NEVER buy professional products at a drug store, chances are they will be expired or Suave in a Redkin bottle. They are only guaranteed when bought at a salon. (:
